Meet Rima Aristocrat, one of our featured speakers at the launch of Soulful Encounters

Rima

“We as human beings are merely travelers. Between birth and death, marks we choose to leave along the journey, are up to us.”  Rima Aristocrat, Status Magazine.

Rima Aristocrat is one of the most powerful women I have met in business and in spirit.  We are deeply honoured to have her as one of our featured speakers at the launch of Soulful Encounters on May 25th.

There is so much already written about Rima but I will choose to highlight my personal testimonial of who she is.

Rima Aristocrat is the President and CEO of Willis College in Ottawa.   I first met her at the 2015 Graduation Ceremony of Willis College of which my son Jelan was a graduate. I was drawn to her presence immediately. She radiates light and love miles from where she stands.  Jelan speaks about his teacher, Ed Mahonny and Rima in the most positive light. “Mom, the principal comes into our classroom and chats with us about everything in life.  Her door is always open and we can always go to her.  I have never felt so much love in a school.” This is only a small description of this brilliant award-honored woman who has continued the legacy of Willis College which was founded in 1896 by Stephen T. Willis.  Ownership of the College was transferred to the Aristocrat family in 1989 and she is the 4th President and CEO of the College. Willis College is the oldest Career College in Ottawa and it is notably unique as an employer led institution which has transitioned over the years from business and language training to diversifying the College offerings in Technology, and Healthcare. Willis College prides itself in preparing students to meet the needs of employers and getting students in the workforce as quickly as possible.

Since then, I have seen Rima take on bigger challenges as she tries to advance the cause of education and manage Willis College, now the oldest Career College.  Willis College just  celebrated 150 years!

Come and listen to her stories on life and the legacy which she wants to leave behind for her grandchildren.

Mags  wishes to thank Rima for having faith in her and supporting the publication of Soulful Encounters.

See you on May 25th!

Rima

Meet Mengistab Tsegaye, one of our featured speakers for the launch of Soulful Encounters

Mengis

I feel blessed, lucky and fortunate that my boss, who is a wonderful mentor and a great human being will be one of our featured speakers for the launch of Soulful Encounters on May 25th, 2016. He has some of the most fascinating stories from his homeland, Eritrea and relates them in an easy manner with lots of life lessons in between. At work, we all feel that we are very lucky to have him as our Executive Director as he truly represents the face of humility with the ability to lead and let others lead as well.

Mengistab Tsegaye has worked over 25 years in the newcomer’s settlement and integration sector.  His home country is Eritrea, a country which he is still connected to and still loves very dearly.  During the war in Ethiopia, he migrated to Kenya, then Italy and finally to Canada.  His life work is being a conduit for others to connect them to resources, people and opportunities and he does so brilliantly in the community. He has served newcomers, refugees and immigrants in Canada as a frontline worker, community leader, social activist and as a leader in immigration and integration solutions. Mengis has served as the president or as a board member of several boards across Ontario and continues to inspire others through the integrity of his work, compassion and desire to see all newcomers succeed and make Canada home, without losing their identity or passions. Mr. Tsegaye is co-founder and Executive Director of World Skills Employment Centre – an organization that provides employment services to newcomers in Ottawa.

Mengis has a Social Work background and extensive experience in employment issues and the challenges newcomers face.

Mr. Tsegaye `s past and present settlement and community involvement includes:

  • Board member, Ontario Council of Agencies Serving Immigrants (OCASI)
  • President of the Eritrean Community of Ottawa
  • Board member, Ottawa Carleton Housing Authority
  • Chair of settlement .org,
  • Chair of Algonquin College Community Collaboration Committee
  • Member of the Employer council of champions in Ottawa
  • Co-Chair, OLIP (Ottawa Local immigration Partnership) Economic Integration Sector Table
  • Board Member for the Children’s Aid Society Ottawa

One of the projects which Mengis and I worked on very dearly was trying to help two wonderful ladies bring in some more business into their restaurant, Red Sea Café.  Although the business is no more, and one of the owners crossed over in 2015, our desire to help them and the response of the community, will always be a wonderful memory for me.

Join us tomorrow evening to enjoy a wonderful inspirational evening of storytelling, faith and perseverance.

Here are the amazing people who will share their life experiences and stories with you.

Meet Emily Cattelan, one of our featured speakers for the launch of Soulful Encounters

Is it possible to find this perfect partner?  I believe so and so does Emily!  It is a wonderful gift to see the love that is shared between Emily and her husband Roger.

In January 2014, I sent out a Face Book request for love stories and ‘what makes you feel safe and valued’ in your relationship.   At that time, I thought I was going to have  an special valentine issue for Mags Magazine.  Emily sent me an article about her relationship and the reasons why she feels safe in her relationship.  I immediately thought “WOW!”  We did not do a publication for Valentine but we thought it was a perfect article for Soulful Encounters! She has hit the nail on the head because what is working so beautifully well for them, are things that most of us want in our relationship!  She clearly does appreciate the many things which Roger does – both in words and in action.  A wonderful example of a positive SOULFUL ENCOUNTER.

Come out and listen to her story on May 25th, 2016 and share in the blessings of love.

Here is a little snippet on Emily:

Roger and Emily

Emily Cattelan has a zest for life and a passion for helping others succeed. She was born in a family of World War 2 Italian immigrants. Her parents, grandparents, uncles and aunts, came to Canada to make a better life for themselves and their children. In this big loving family, Emily was taught to love and respect all living things and to always help those in need. This helped to shape Emily’s belief that our most important role on this earth is to support each living thing in becoming the best that they can be. She believes that this can be accomplished through nurturing, mutual love, respect, and random acts of kindness. She has instilled these lessons in her daughter and she is looking forward to teaching her 2 young grandchildren these same lessons. She is here to share her story of how she found her perfect life partner

Look out for our next featured couple:  Dale and Trevor Stevenson!

Risk being seen and known for all your splendor, beauty and awesomeness

IMG_1789

Risk being seen and being known for all of your splendor, beauty , magnificence and awesomeness.” Mags

Mags Magazine is pulling emotions out of readers. Some of these emotions have been buried for years.  As readers write to me or meet me to share their different perspectives on how the articles connect to their life experiences, I know that I have done the work which I have been guided to do although it has caused me to step out of my comfort zone. After many years of working with different people, I know that the emotional body has a stronger hold over us, than most of us would care to admit. It is actually quite alarming how buried emotions keep us locked in our own prisons and deprive us of using our talent to serve life fearlessly.

Many of us cannot claim our brilliance because of our life experiences which have left us confused, hurt, broken and disillusioned. It is easier to keep ourselves in the shadow and let others claim the light. Why not you? There is a place in this magnificent world  for each of us. One lady said to me: “We are all responsible for what is happening today. When we don’t make decisions to claim our lives, others claim it and the results are disastrous. Even though I am almost 60, reading your Magazine has created a shift in me to accept responsibility for my life and has caused me to reflect on many, many things which happened to me as a child and left me traumatized.  I buried them inside of me.”

Risk being seen and being known for all your splendor, beauty and awesomeness. Too long have we buried the beautiful things inside of us for fear that someone will say ‘who does she/he think she/he is?’ Too long have we waited to get someone’s approval to let our light shine. It is so much easier for us to see the light in someone and choose not to celebrate it because of our own fears and insecurities. It is easier to kill talent, stop innovation and continue to live in the same humdrum that keeps us and those around us so comfortable.

Step out of that comfort zone… life will reward you equally. Don’t let fear run your life.
