“I’ve enjoyed reading your articles thoroughly and have been transported to a different place for the last few hours! Thank you for that experience. I’m not sure which article I enjoyed reading the most as they are all so full and expansive for me, but possibly the one on your mother. I hold my own mother dearly and often reflect on her journey to Canada years ago. Mags Magazine is fantastic! I was engrossed in the content and your story telling. Thank you for sharing with me and sharing your soul and stories with others.”

“Life is about ebb and flow… and it is about being self-aware enough about what is going on in your life to know when you need to change something. Ask yourself, ‘Is this where I want to be? Where do I want to go?’ By thinking more about those questions, you will be inspired to make the changes you need to make to allow your life flow again.” Shaundra Oelsner, Senior Associate, Sunlife Financial.
Shaundra and I reconnected again after several years of not seeing each other. This woman inspires me with her contagious laughter, big heart and the courage she had to make a major career change a few years ago when she transitioned from her 20 year career in Nursing. One day, she asked herself, “Will my salary as a nurse – even at it’s maximum – enable me to see my kids through university?” Her answer was “NO”. This awareness caused her to explore an opportunity in the Financial Services Sector with Sunlife Financial. She is now a Senior Associate and a Recruiting Manager and she has never regretted making that change. She is thrilled that she tuned in to her financial needs and had the courage to step up to pursue a new career path which has enabled her to meet her financial goals.
By taking that one step several years ago, Shaundra started living her future.
What inspires you? What change do you need to make? What motivates you to make that change?
Live your future NOW by taking a simple step to move yourself forward.

I woke up this morning thinking about a young man whom I met this week and whose smile left a smile in my heart. I was taken aback because three years ago when I first met him, his face was always so serious that I found it very difficult to relax around him. He was a very qualified individual who secured many interviews but had difficulties in securing a job.
In a nutshell, three years ago he was struggling in adapting to his new environment and also with learning English as a second language. Automatically, it created a high level of stress as he tried to focus on interpreting what was being said to him. This deep focus caused him to lose his smile during his first interactions with anyone at all. His interviewers found him to be ‘too serious’ and ‘lacked interpersonal skills’. As difficult as this may sound, first impressions are very important during interviews and unfortunately employers don’t have the time to analyze why you may have lost your smile.
Three years later, it is so much easier for him to smile freely because the language flows much easier and he is now more comfortable with his environment. He has also been able to secure permanent employment and is now creating a plan for career growth. His interpersonal skills are much more visible now and he creates a great first impression.
Your facial expression, dress and body language are all interconnected.
So, what is it about smiling that connects us with others? Here are two quotes to think about:
“A warm smile is the universal language of kindness.” William Arthur Ward
“A smile is the universal welcome.” Max Eastman
Personally, I love being around people who smile, laugh and bring a positive aura into my space. Research proves that smiling and laughing create physiological changes in our bodies, even when we are not aware of it.
There are several huge benefits to smiling and laughing:
The muscles in our faces relax and makes us look more approachable. It invites others into our presence. Employers and coworkers find that people who smile create a happier work environment. Even at home and with friends, our smiles and laughter enhances our communication.
Endorphins are released into our bodies. Endorphins are happy hormones which has several benefits of lowering our blood pressure and reducing production of cortisol which is a stress hormone.
When smiles break into laughter, it expands our lungs which brings more oxygen into our bodies. This gives the same feeling as though you have exercised!
My tip for this post: Practice smiling. If it does not come naturally to you, fake it until it happens automatically. Find things to smile about and hang around people who inspire smiles and laughter.
Your sweat is the bond which you have with yourself to follow your heart, believe in yourself and to do the work which is burning in your soul. Don’t be afraid to sweat even though no one else may understand what drives you. The work which your soul is destined to fulfil was not assigned to you loosely but rather, you were trusted to carry it out. This journey is unique to you and only YOU will understand the magnitude of the work of your soul – only when you work from the soul level.
You may wonder then, if it is your soul work, why isn’t it being done faster or without tribulations or trials? You may wonder why you are being faced with barriers, rejections and lack of support. The answer is simple – the soul needs to grow and experience many emotions across its many lifetimes. This lifetime may not be the one where you will reap the amazing rewards you feel that you should reap. However, if the dimension which has to be done in this lifetime, is not done, there isn’t a chance that you will ever reap what you are capable of, even though you may live through several lifetimes.
Make this lifetime count. Don’t worry so much about the outcomes. Engage in the present. Make daily choices to support your soul work. Stand proud and tall today for every single bead of sweat which has come from your own inner efforts and whisper a word of gratitude to the Universe, your Creator, your soul group which holds you in reverence and believes in you.
“Gold medals aren’t really made of gold. They’re made of sweat, determination, and a hard-to-find alloy called guts.” Dan Gable
“Nobody ever drowned in his own sweat.” Ann Landers
The RIO games demonstrate such excellence, passion and commitment at various levels – of the athletes, of families, communities and countries. I admire that resilience, focus and determination of our athletes, both in winning and also not being placed at the top. There is no loser. I have tremendous admiration for each person who took up the challenge to compete. Every single act of commitment to our passions is a blessing to the world in one form or another.
Their performances remind me that each of them built their skills and competences over a long period of time. We can apply the same principles in our daily lives and work at molding excellence within us so that whatever we do, whatever we say, wherever we are… we can safely say that, “This is the best version of me and my efforts in creating excellence within me.”
What is built from within, will stand the test of time.
Mastery over our emotions and attitude towards living our dreams or reaching beyond who we are in this moment, can begin in small doses of doing more and less.
Be a little bit kinder
Listen a little bit longer
Smile a little bit more often
Dream a little bit more
Give a litte bit extra
Have a little more faith
Trust a little bit more
Speak the truth a little more
Be a little bit more committed
Try a little bit harder
Write a little bit more
Exercise a little bit more
Connect a bit more often
Hug a little big longer
Let go a little bit more
Trust your intuition a little bit more…
Drink a little bit less
Eat a little bit less
Think a little bit less
Worry a little bit less
Procrastinate a little bit less
Let go of the need to be perfect…
Often, we get disillusioned with ourselves when we don’t experience the big changes we would like to see but remember that everything which we focus on expands. The more you practice the things which you would like to see in yourself, the greater are your chances of succeeding.
We only need to do a little bit more or less each day to engineer new and positive habits within us.
